Dundee has a history which is so fascinating. However, there are so many things in the city that people across Dundee miss! From magazines to foods, here are just ten Dundee things we still miss today!

Wallace’s Pehs

Wallace’s pehs were the brainchild of the Auld Dundee Pie Shop that was spearheaded by the Wallace family. With this week being National Pie Week, many on Dundee Culture followers and visitors have expressed their love for the Wallace peh and

Royal Arch

The Royal Arch was one of the flagship landmarks in Dundee and it was built for the arrival of Queen Victoria in Dundee, but many accounts reveal that she didn’t even see it! Many have called for it to return as part of the waterfront redevelopment. It did briefly return in 2018 albeit in a cardboard format which was then knocked down!

Dundee West Railway Station

One of the best architectural marvels in 19th century Dundee! The Dundee West Railway Station was located opposite where the Malmaison is today. It was an engineering marvel, it featured a beautiful clock tower and entrance! It was demolished to make way for the Tay Road Bridge in the 1960s.

Old Olympia

The Old Olympia is fondly remembered by many Dundonians - and compared to the new one, which has been mired in controversy since opening in 2013, was often considered the best attraction to go to in Dundee. When the light of the colour of your band beeped, you tried your best to stay in the pools longer. It was the best place to be in Dundee on the weekend afternoons!

Jackie

Jackie was a magazine printed by DC Thomson and was the most popular for girls growing up in not just Dundee, or Scotland, but the entire UK. The magazine was something that became a cultural institution and is widely missed by thousands who once read it! Bring it back Thomsons!

Overgate Beano Characters

Was it a Mandela effect or not? The latter. There were Beano characters on each level of the Overgate car park. What happened to them? Why were they removed? We need them back! Instead of wondering what numbered level you parked on, you could just shout Minnie the Minx or Dennis the Menace - and then you’d find your car easier!

Wellgate Waterfall

It was once of the most impressive attractions of the Wellgate Centre back when it opened in 1978, alongside the clock which is thankfully still here, but the Wellgate Waterfall was removed. Hopefully we’ll see a new waterfall somewhere in Dundee in the near future. Perhaps with the Eden Project coming, they could name a waterfall there in its honour?

Dundee Trams

Trams were a treasured piece of life in Dundee, having kept the city moving forward throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, but they were discontinued in the 1950s to make way for diesel buses. Many cities have or are introducing trams back into city life, why not Dundee? Well, that’s the thing - it’s all about the money, and bringing them back would cost quite a bit - trambuses could be a much better alternative though!

Littlewoods Cafe

A legend in Dundee history which dates back to the 90s. It was said that the Littlewoods cafe, located in the former Overgate where Primark is today, would be mobbed with people trying to get the window seats. Basically, it was like the Hunger Games, but without the blood and violence.

The King’s Theatre

The King’s Theatre is often forgotten about but it is still here albeit no longer used. Located on the Cowgate, it opened on 15 March 1909 and it is the only surviving theatre in the Dundee area capable of hosting large touring productions. There have been several attempts to revive the old place back to life as a new venue. Perhaps we’ll get there someday!
