The RRS Discovery has been identified as one of the UK's best attractions to visit during half-term, based on a new list released by London North Eastern Railway (LNER).
The LNER ranked the iconic Dundee attraction second on their list and said:
“A short walk from Dundee station lives the RRS Discovery, the wooden steamship that carried Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton on their Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901.
How better to discover the history of this pioneering ship than by stepping aboard and exploring it for yourself? Take a stroll through the quarters to see how the brave crew lived for many years aboard the vessel, or head through the Discovery Point museum.”
Situated only a short walk from Dundee railway station, the veteran wooden steamship played a pivotal role in the opening up of Antarctica, carrying Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton on their ground-breaking Discovery Expedition in 1901.
Visitors today can walk aboard and discover firsthand what conditions were like for the fearless crew who spent years in some of the most hostile environments on earth.
The Discovery Point museum alongside the ship gives further information on this maritime era of grandeur.
Sharing the news on social media, the team at RRS Discovery expressed appreciation, stating:
“A huge thank you to London North Eastern Railway for including us in their 8 Unexpected Things to See This Half Term!
If you're travelling on Scotland's breathtaking East coast line, you can catch us a stone's throw away from Dundee's train station; we're right across the road. Adventure awaits aboard the RRS Discovery!“
