NASA has revealed a collaboration with a charity in Dundee to set up a new research hub in the city.
As per The Courier, the US space agency has joined forces with Kids Operating Room (KidsOR) to explore innovative oxygen-generation technology.
Each year, numerous lives are lost due to respiratory infections triggered by insufficient oxygen in medical facilities. KidsOR will trial a pioneering technology - developed by Nasa - to produce medical-grade oxygen directly in hospitals.
The charity will establish a NASA Research Centre at its location off the Kingsway.
The new technology, known as Medical Ceramic Oxygen Generator or "M-COG," will undergo testing at the site.
If successful, the technology could prevent unnecessary deaths, particularly among children lacking oxygen.
Garreth Wood, co-founder and chairman of KidsOR, expressed optimism about the partnership with Nasa and its potential to transform lives.
M-COG, developed by Nasa, could be utilised in future missions to the Moon or Mars.
Engineer John Graf from NASA highlighted the dual benefits of technology developed for space exploration aiding in saving lives on Earth.
The partnership aims to deploy M-COG in hospitals in low-income countries, demonstrating the synergy between space technology and healthcare.
Additionally, a local Dundee business has designed components for an upcoming mission to Jupiter.
