Mills Observatory has just been recommended to be saved from closure


It has been recommended that Mills Observatory remain open after officers from Dundee City Council agreed that this was the preferred option.


The news comes after the observatory was facing the threat of closure after Leisure and Culture Dundee announced plans at the start of the year to look to axe three attractions: Mills Observatory, Broughty Castle Museum and Caird Park golf course.


Whilst Broughty Castle Museum and Caird Park golf course have been earmarked for closure, Mills Observatory


Additional funding for the observatory, up to £95,000, will be distributed over the course of the next three to five years.


The report for the upcoming City Development meeting was released on Tuesday and stated that


Options for the near future which are being explored as a result of the recommendation would see the observatory work alongside the Scottish Enterprise Space Team to develop a business plan for the observatory as part of a longer term plan looking into funding streams.


Another idea being explored is the potential for developing an education package that would look at careers in the space industry.


All of the recommendations will be up for debate on 2 December 2024 with the final vote on the observatory to take place there too.
