Mills Observatory are hosting a special event for the solar eclipse on 29 March

Writer: Andrew BatchelorAndrew Batchelor

Mills Observatory is set to mark the end of its season with a special opening for a rare partial solar eclipse on Saturday 29 March.

Up to 45% of the sun will be obscured during the event, offering a stunning celestial display for visitors.

The observatory will open at 9:30 AM, with the eclipse reaching its peak just after 11am, before closing again at 12.30pm. Mills will also reopen later in the evening at 6.30pm for its final session of the season.

Visitors will have the chance to safely view the eclipse with special glasses available for just £1 from the Mills Observatory shop.

A solar projector will also be set up to provide an alternative way to watch the event unfold. Families can take part in drop-in space-themed crafts run by the Creative Learning Team between 10am – 12pm.

‘Event will cap off an unbelievable season’

This special event comes at the end of what has been an incredible season for Mills Observatory. Not long ago, the historic site faced an uncertain future, with the threat of closure hanging over it.

Now, thanks to overwhelming public support and renewed interest, it has experienced an unbelievable resurgence.

The upcoming eclipse event is a fitting finale, capping off a season that has seen the observatory thrive once again.

With the observatory set to close until it reopens for the new season on 1 October 2025, this is the perfect opportunity to visit before the break. If the skies stay clear, it promises to be a breathtaking way to send off the season in style.
