Dundee is a city that punches well above its weight.

From world-changing inventions to a booming gaming industry, it’s a place packed with history, innovation, and a bit of Dundonian charm.

If you need convincing, here are ten reasons why Dundee is pure teckle.

We are one of the world’s most innovative cities

Dundee has played a major role in shaping the modern world. Some of the biggest inventions and discoveries originated here, including statistical graphs (bar charts, line graphs, pie charts), aspirin, adhesive postage stamps, aviation developments, and even the incandescent light bulb.

We also played a role in the incorporation of Toronto, Canada’s largest city through William Lyon Mackenzie - whilst Williamina Fleming discovered the Horsehead Nebula and white dwarf stars.

Not to mention, the city built the world’s first purpose-built scientific research ship, RRS Discovery, and opened the UK’s first purpose-built observatory, Mills Observatory.

We are a city of firsts

Dundee isn’t just any city—it’s Scotland’s oldest city and the UK’s first UNESCO City of Design. It was also the first Living Wage City in the UK and holds the title of Video Game Capital of Europe. That’s a lot of impressive firsts for a city of its size!

We are a global tech hub

Dundee is at the cutting edge of gaming, esports, and medical sciences. It’s home to some of the UK’s most exciting tech startups and continues to be a hub for innovation and investment. Whether it’s in game development or groundbreaking life sciences research, the city is leading the way.

We are home to some top tier universities

Dundee’s universities are world-class. The University of Dundee is a pioneer in medical and life sciences, while Abertay University put Dundee on the map as the first in the world to offer degrees in computer games design and ethical hacking. That’s a legacy that continues to attract students and researchers from across the globe.

We have a waterfront that wows the world

Dundee’s waterfront redevelopment is one of the most talked-about urban transformations in the world. It has gained international recognition, featured on major news networks in the US, Germany, Australia, and the Netherlands, and continues to reshape the city’s skyline.

We are home to the best-selling comic magazine in the western world

Dundee is home to DC Thomson, the legendary publisher of The Beano, which holds the title of the world’s longest-running comic magazine and the best-selling comic in the Western world. Generations have grown up with Dennis, Minnie, and the Bash Street Kids—all thanks to Dundee!

We are the UK’s coolest little city - quite literally

It’s not just us that think Dundee is cool—GQ Magazine named it the UK’s coolest little city. And honestly, they weren’t wrong!

We have oor own language

Dundee has its own unique dialect, Dundonian, with words that leave non-locals scratching their heads. Ever heard of a peh (pie), cundie (drain), teckle (brilliant), fleg (scare), or dowp (backside)? Well, now you have!

We are Scotland’s sunniest city

Dundee enjoys more sunshine hours than any other city in Scotland. So, if you’re looking for a bright and lively place to visit (or live), you know where to go!

We are a top city break destination

Dundee is fast becoming one of the UK’s top city break destinations. In 2023, the city saw the highest number of visitors in its history, proving that more and more people are discovering just how special Dundee really is.

So, whether you’re drawn by the city’s history, creativity, or just fancy a peh in the sun, Dundee is a place like no other!
