Mills Observatory is set to reopen for the 2024/2025 season. Whether you’re an astronomy enthusiast or simply looking for a unique outing, Mills Observatory has something for everyone. Here’s everything you need to know about its reopening.

Opening Hours & Season

The observatory will open its doors on 1 October 2024, running through to 31 March 2025. During this winter season, you can visit the observatory six nights a week:

  • Monday to Friday: 4pm – 10pm

  • Saturday: 6.30pm – 10pm

  • Sunday: Closed (though special events and lectures may take place)

Entry is completely free and there's no need to book in advance. Simply drop by and explore the wonders of the night sky or take in the spectacular treetop views across Dundee.

What to Expect

Mills Observatory is a must-visit for anyone with a passion for space, astronomy, or natural beauty. Here’s what you can look forward to:

  • Stargazing & Planetary Viewing: Peer through the observatory’s telescopes to observe stars, planets, and other celestial phenomena. Night sky viewing is subject to clear skies, so keep an eye on the weather before heading out.

  • Astronomical Displays: Discover fascinating exhibits about space exploration, the solar system, and much more.

  • Fully Computerised Telescope: Mills is equipped with a state-of-the-art telescope capable of detecting up to 30,000 celestial objects.

  • Planetarium Shows: Join a guided tour of the night sky in the Planetarium Room. You’ll learn about constellations, galaxies, asteroids, and more, with a chance to use the telescopes afterwards (weather permitting).

Planetarium Show Dates & Booking

The Planetarium Shows are an exciting highlight of the observatory’s programme and are available on select Fridays. Shows will run at 7pm, 8pm, and 9pm on the following dates:

  • 4 & 18 October 2024

  • 1 & 15 November 2024

  • 6 & 20 December 2024

  • 3 & 17 January 2025

  • 7 & 21 February 2025

  • 7 & 21 March 2025

Ticket Cost for Planetarium Show

  • Adults: £3.00

  • Children: £1.50 (suitable for children aged 6 and over)

Booking is essential and can only be made by telephone. You can call 01382 435967 during opening hours to secure your spot. Each show has a capacity of 25 visitors, so early booking is advised. If you can no longer attend, do let the team know so others can take your place.

Using the Telescopes

Visitors can enjoy using the observatory’s telescopes with guidance from staff. The observatory features multiple telescopes located in its dome, perfect for star and planet watching.

However, viewing is weather dependent. For the best experience, aim to visit on a clear evening when the stars are visible to the naked eye.

There is no charge for using the telescopes or any of the observatory’s equipment, but donations are always appreciated.

Accessibility & Parking

As a historic building, Mills Observatory may not be accessible to everyone. The building features narrow stairways which may present difficulties for those with limited mobility. If you have any concerns, you can call the observatory in advance at 01382 435967 for more information.

There is a small car park at the entrance to the observatory, including two accessible parking spaces for visitors.

Mills Observatory is an iconic destination in Dundee, combining natural beauty with the wonders of space. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning for another season, the observatory offers a magical experience for people of all ages. Plan your visit today and prepare for an unforgettable journey through the cosmos!
