Eilish McColgan has broke the Scottish record in the Women’s Elite Race at her London Marathon debut with a time of 2:24:25.
The 34-year-old Dundonian finished eighth overall, picking up the pace as she powered over the line to a rapturous reception from the London crowd.
Despite visibly feeling the strain in the final stages, McColgan achieved one of her key personal goals – beating the best time set by her mother, Liz McColgan, who famously won the London Marathon in 1996.
Liz’s mark stood for nearly three decades before her daughter surpassed it with a determined and gritty performance.
It was a decent and promising first attempt over the marathon distance for Eilish, who has already enjoyed a decorated career on the track and in road racing.
At the front of the race, Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa produced a stunning display, charging to victory and setting a new women’s-only world record.
However, Paula Radcliffe’s overall women’s course record – set with male pacemakers – remains intact for another year.
McColgan’s performance marks a new chapter in her career, hinting at even greater things to come in the marathon scene.
