Dundee’s skies are about to get even brighter – literally.

From next week, sunsets in the city will officially push past the 9pm mark, marking the beginning of the long, light-filled evenings locals look forward to every year.

According to astronomical data from TimeandDate, the sun will set at 21:01 on Sunday 5 May, ushering in a period where the days stretch well into the night. It’s a welcome shift for many, signalling the arrival of late spring and the long-awaited countdown to summer. From that point on, sunset times will continue to get later until the summer solstice in June.

The milestone also coincides with a noticeable growth in daylight hours – with days already lasting more than 15 hours and increasing by around four minutes daily. By mid-June, Dundee will see sunsets as late as 22:03, giving residents ample time to enjoy the waterfront, parks and outdoor dining spots bathed in golden light.

The city’s sunsets will begin edging back earlier as summer winds down, with the last 9pm sunset forecast for 11 August. Coincidentally, that’s just one day before Dundee Culture marks its 12th anniversary on 12 August – a symbolic end to the high summer stretch of extended daylight.

So whether you’re capturing skyline photos, heading out for an evening walk or just soaking up the glow from your window, next week is the start of something special: the season of late sunsets in the city of discovery.
