Dundee Rep alumni Alan Cumming is returning to the Doctor Who universe—this time as the voice of Mr Ring-a-Ding, a runaway cartoon character with a dark twist.

Cumming, a former performer at Dundee Rep, previously portrayed King James I in Doctor Who’s Series 11.

Now, he takes on a very different role in the upcoming season of the iconic sci-fi show, bringing to life a 1930s style rubber hose cartoon character who discovers the real world—with terrifying consequences.

Mr Ring-a-Ding, a cheerful, singalong animation, stars in Sunny Town alongside his friend Sunshine Sally. But in 1952, after years of being projected onto cinema screens across the country, something changes. He looks beyond the screen and sees the real world outside—and what follows is nothing short of chilling.

Showrunner Russell T Davies expressed his excitement about Cumming’s casting, stating:

“Only Alan Cumming could give a runaway cartoon so much wit, malice, danger and fun. He makes the whole universe of Doctor Who wilder and madder than ever, and it’s an absolute honour to welcome him on board the TARDIS.”

Known for his charismatic and versatile performances, Cumming’s return to the Doctor Who universe is sure to be a highlight of the new season. Fans can expect a mix of humour, charm, and eerie suspense as Mr Ring-a-Ding steps out of the screen and into the real world.
