Dundee Naturalist Society's 150th anniversary is being celebrated in a new exhibition at the McManus

A new exhibition at The McManus: Dundee's Art Gallery & Museum celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Dundee Naturalists’ Society.

This small display, hosted in the Landscapes and Lives 2 gallery, highlights the society’s longstanding connection with The McManus, dating back to its beginnings as the Albert Institute.

Founded in 1874, the Dundee Naturalists’ Society was established to promote an interest in science and technology in Dundee. Over the past 150 years, the society’s focus has evolved in response to social and scientific changes.

The exhibition showcases nearly 2,500 natural history objects donated to The McManus over the years, including archaeology, plants, birds, butterflies, moths, and shells from the Dundee area. The society has also contributed a library of over 700 textbooks and ephemera.

Visitors can explore how the society’s activities have developed in line with broader events in Dundee and Scotland, as well as how technological advancements throughout the 20th century have transformed our understanding of the natural world.

The exhibition is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm, and on Sundays from 12:30pm to 4:30pm.
