Dundee is bidding to become the headquarters of GB Energy

Dundee has announced its intention to bid to become the headquarters of the new Great British Energy (GB Energy)

Representatives from Dundee City Council have announced intentions to contact the UK Government to present Dundee as a potential location for the firm. This move is seen as a step towards job creation within the clean energy sector.

Great British Energy is envisioned as a publicly-owned energy company aimed at promoting clean energy deployment, enhancing energy independence, and fostering job growth.

The UK Government has stated its commitment to ensuring that UK taxpayers, billpayers, and communities benefit from clean and secure domestically produced energy.

While the location for the company's base is yet to be finalized, Convener of Fair Work, Economic Growth & Infrastructure, Steven Rome, believes there are strong reasons for considering Dundee.

He plans to reach out to Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero of the United Kingdom, to outline the city's proposition.

Councillor Rome highlighted Dundee's involvement in the country's shift towards clean energy, citing examples such as the renewables hub at the Port of Dundee and the innovative work at MSIP focusing on sustainable mobility.

Depute Convener Councillor Siobhan Tolland emphasized the need for strategic support to boost Dundee's economy for the future, pointing out the city's current shortage of UK Government jobs.

The UK Government has announced an allocation of £8.3 billion towards Great British Energy, with an initial emphasis on offshore wind projects. The specific location for GB Energy's headquarters in Scotland will be disclosed at a later date.
