Dundee has been named as one of the most tech-savvy cities in the UK, a new study has revealed as research shed light on the internet habits of people across the country.
Dundee is right in the mix, as Scotland’s tech capital keeps pace with the country’s most connected regions.
The research, carried out by Ink Digital using data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), examined online usage across 174 areas of the UK.
Analysts looked at the percentage of people who had accessed the internet over a recent three-month period, providing a fresh insight into the nation’s digital behaviour.
While Croydon topped the charts with an astonishing 99.1% of residents getting online, Dundee held its own with 96.1% connected, reflecting the city’s continued drive towards digital innovation and connectivity.
Dundee has long been recognised for its tech-savvy population and is renowned for its tech innovation in the gaming industry, creative tech scene, and thriving life sciences sector.
Dundee’s transformation over the past decade has been deeply intertwined with the digital revolution.
From the waterfront’s V&A Dundee becoming a digital storytelling hub, to the city’s commitment to expanding its tech infrastructure, local residents are increasingly online for everything from remote working and virtual events to everyday browsing and social engagement.
Neighbouring areas in Scotland also performed well in the study, with the Scottish Borders notably achieving 97.6% internet usage, suggesting that strong digital engagement is not limited to major urban centres.
The findings also shine a light on broader trends. The top-performing areas outside of Dundee included Brighton and Hove, which ranked fourth overall thanks to its creative industries and sea-view remote working culture, and Camden and the City of London, where 98.3% of residents are actively online.
As Dundee continues to position itself as a city of innovation, its growing digital engagement mirrors its ambitions.
With initiatives supporting digital inclusion and tech education across the city, Dundee is not just part of the online conversation — it’s helping to lead it.
The research highlights the importance of strong digital infrastructure, not just for economic growth but also for everyday life.
In a post-pandemic world where hybrid working and digital events are the norm, Dundee’s push to stay connected is paying off.
As the city looks ahead to future opportunities - from smart city developments to global collaborations in gaming and health tech - its place in the UK’s digital landscape seems set to strengthen even further.
