Dundee Graffiti Jam are preparing for their 20th anniversary event

The Dundee Graffiti Jam have announced their plans for their 20th anniversary event which is set to be hosted on 27-28 July.

Launched in 2003, the Graffiti Jam has become a cornerstone of the Dundee community, fostering creativity, unity, and artistic expression among residents and visitors alike.

This eagerly anticipated event is the longest-running aerosol arts event in Scotland, and will mark its impressive two-decade milestone by returning to the vibrant DPM Park in Dundee.

The park holds a special significance as the UK's longest-standing legal graffiti space, providing a unique and dynamic backdrop for the celebration of urban art.

Since 2006, the driving force behind the organisation of this iconic event has been Adam Milroy, a local graffiti artist and tattoo artist. Adam's passion for graffiti culture and commitment to showcasing the talent within the community have been instrumental in the success and growth of the Dundee Graffiti Jam.

Over the years, the event has garnered international attention in the art community, attracting artists from around the globe to converge in Dundee and contribute their diverse styles and techniques to the colourful tapestry of the city's urban landscape.

Each edition of the Graffiti Jam serves as a testament to the power of art in bringing people together, transcending boundaries, and inspiring creativity in all who participate.

Iconic murals

The Oor Wullie mural created by Gazmac + Sapien during one of the Graffiti Jams has become a beloved and iconic artwork in the Hilltown area.

This vibrant piece not only showcases the artistic talent of the creators but also captures the essence of the community and its rich cultural heritage. Situated at the top of the Hilltown, near the famous Hilltown Clock, the mural serves as a visual landmark that adds character to the neighbourhood.

The mural does however showcase a powerful message about hidden mental health issues, depicting Oor Wullie, who appears happy and joyful on the surface, hiding away with his emotions with his iconic bucket placed on to his head which conveys a sense of sadness on the inside.

This deeper layer adds a poignant and thought-provoking dimension to the artwork, encouraging viewers to reflect on the complexities of human emotions and the importance of mental wellbeing.

40 artists are coming for this year's event

For this year's event, 40 talented artists will come together to create a stunning graffiti production spanning almost 300 meters.

Each artist will contribute their unique style while adhering to the same colour theme, resulting in a cohesive and visually striking masterpiece that will captivate all who are attending the event.

The collaborative effort and creative energy of these artists will bring a vibrant and dynamic element to the festival, showcasing the power of art to unite and inspire.

The event will also be set to music, with beats being provided by Tunage on both days.
