The proposed takeover of the Wellgate Shopping Centre by Dundee and Angus College will be open to everyone, college principal Simon Hewitt has confirmed.
Plans for the college’s relocation to the Wellgate site were first revealed in November last year, with the goal of transforming the shopping centre into a new campus.
If approved, the project would see the 1978-built Wellgate Centre repurposed, replacing the college’s Kingsway campus in the north of the city.
The proposal offers an opportunity to revitalise the centre while benefiting Dundee as a whole.
The future of the Wellgate Clock
Among the key concerns raised during discussions was the future of the Wellgate Clock, a beloved Dundee landmark that has been ticking away non-stop for 45 years.

Installed on the upper floor of the shopping centre in September 1978, the clock has remained a cherished feature of city life, standing the test of time even in the digital age.
With the potential demolition or redevelopment of the shopping centre, many had questioned whether the clock would be lost. However, these fears have now been put to rest.
‘There will be a home for the clock on campus’
Speaking at the Business Insight event, hosted by Neville Communications at Dundee Contemporary Arts on Friday, Simon Hewitt reassured attendees that the clock will have a permanent home within the new campus, acknowledging its historical significance to Dundee.
“There will be a home for the clock on campus,” Hewitt stated, confirming the college’s commitment to preserving the iconic timepiece.
‘Wellgate campus will be open for all’
Another key question from Dundee Culture followers was whether the Wellgate campus would be accessible only to students.
Hewitt clarified that the new site will be open to everyone, maintaining a welcoming atmosphere similar to that of a shopping centre.
“We want the campus to be open for all,” he said. “We want it to still act like a shopping centre, where you can sit and chat over a coffee.”
With the Wellgate campus set to remain open to the public and the clock’s future secured, Dundonians will be able to enjoy this iconic piece of the city’s history for years to come.
