Dundee has been basking in a well-deserved spotlight lately.

Recent accolades for the university, recognition as the UK’s electric vehicle capital, and being named the only Scottish finalist in WWF’s We Love Cities initiative highlight the city’s commitment to sustainability.

This renewed attention is not merely a coincidence; it is the result of the city that is actively shaping its future while staying true to its roots.

Looking at Ben Hendry’s recent column in the Courier, where he examined the contrasting fortunes of Dundee and Aberdeen, he pondered what Dundee has that Aberdeen currently lacks. Ben’s points resonated with me, as he touched on the proactive nature of Dundee’s development.

While other Scottish cities like Aberdeen as well as Glasgow unfortunately appear to be struggling to adapt recently, Dundee is forging ahead, leveraging its existing strengths to create new opportunities.

This is exemplified by the recent launch of Abertay University’s new Competitive Games Lab, reinforcing Dundee's status as a leading hub for gaming, esports, and digital arts.

As I consider the wider implications of Dundee’s trajectory, it’s clear that other cities could benefit from looking to Dundee as a model for urban reinvention.

The city’s transformation is not just about embracing the latest trends, it’s about cultivating a vision that combines innovation with tradition.

The establishment of the Competitive Games Lab is a prime example of this approach, signalling that Dundee is not only adapting to the future but also positioning itself at the forefront of an industry that continues to expand and evolve.

The recent announcement of Glen Clova, a life sciences company relocating from Glasgow to Dundee, further emphasises this momentum.

The anticipated Life Sciences Innovation District is poised to enhance Dundee’s burgeoning life sciences sector, attracting new talent and investment.

This movement is a vote of confidence in a city that is increasingly seen as a destination for forward-thinking industries.

Of course, it would be naïve to ignore the challenges that Dundee faces. Issues such as drug misuse, poverty, homelessness and boarded up shops on the high street are prevalent, but these issues are not confined to Dundee as cities worldwide indeed have these same struggles.

And these struggles are complex and multifaceted, reflecting broader societal issues that require comprehensive solutions.

However, the focus should be on how we tackle these challenges rather than allowing them to overshadow the city’s progress.

What sets Dundee apart is its resilience and adaptability. The city is not merely resting on its laurels, it is actively engaging with its challenges while celebrating its successes.

This dual approach is essential for building a vibrant community that can thrive in an ever-changing world.

As I reflect on the current state of Dundee, I am filled with optimism. The city is not just surviving; it is thriving. Dundee is poised to be a beacon of innovation and sustainability, proving that with vision and determination, it is possible to transform a city’s identity.

In doing so, Dundee is not just paving its own path but offering a blueprint for others to follow.

It’s an exciting time to be part of this city, and I look forward to witnessing what the future holds for Dundee as it continues to rise and shine on the global stage.
