ANDREW BATCHELOR: Abertay University is still leading the way after 30 years

Abertay University recently celebrated a significant milestone—30 years since it officially gained university status.

Over the past three decades, Abertay has consistently proven itself to be a pioneering institution, both innovative and groundbreaking in its approach to education and research.

One of Abertay's most notable achievements is its leadership in the field of technology education. In 1997, the university launched the world’s first degree in computer games design, a move that solidified Dundee’s reputation as a global leader in this rapidly growing industry.

This commitment to staying ahead of the curve continued in 2006, when Abertay introduced the world’s first degree in Ethical Hacking, further establishing its role as a trailblazer in the tech sector.

I have always spoken passionately about how Dundee is rapidly emerging as a global tech hub, and much of this success can be attributed to the remarkable work being done at Abertay University.

The institution's influence is palpable throughout the city, driving innovation and attracting talent from around the world.

Recently, Abertay made headlines again with the opening of its cyberQuarter, an exceptional facility dedicated to cybersecurity research and development.

This state-of-the-art centre is poised to become a cornerstone of Dundee's tech landscape, offering cutting-edge resources and building collaboration between academia, industry, and government.

Looking ahead, I am incredibly excited about the future of Abertay University. One of the most promising developments on the horizon is the new research and development facility at Dundee’s City Quay.

This facility, overseen by Abertay, is set to revolutionise the UK's film, TV, and performing arts industries by driving the next generation of visual effects technologies.

It represents yet another example of how Abertay is not only contributing to Dundee’s reputation as an emerging global tech hub, but also pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the creative industries.

Abertay University has been instrumental in transforming Dundee into the thriving tech centre it is today, and I am proud to see the university continue to grow from strength to strength.

It’s achievements are just simply incredible, and on top that, it has been highly regarded as one of the top universities in Scotland for students, having recently been ranked as the best modern university in the country for student satisfaction.

Abertay, in the 30 years it has been a university, has built a vibrant community of students, faculty, and industry partners who are dedicated to making a positive impact.

The university’s emphasis on practical learning and industry collaboration ensures that its graduates are not only well-educated but also job-ready, making significant contributions to their industries from day one.

As it embarks on its next chapter, I have no doubt that Abertay will continue to lead the way in innovation and excellence, not just in Dundee, but on the world stage.
