Dundee's vibrant arts scene is to be put under the spotlight this summer with the launch of Dundee Cinéma les Auteurs, a new, free three-day film festival celebrating local filmmaking talent.
The festival, which has been set up by Gomni Productions, will run from June 13 to 15 in The Vine, Roseangle, and offer a platform for local filmmakers from Dundee and the surrounding area to show their work.
Applications for the inaugural edition are now being taken for a wide range of material including feature films, shorts, music videos, aerial material captured using drones, social media clips, and archive footage.
The only requirement is a definitive link to Dundee - presumably through its creators, place of filming, or subject matter.
A showcase instead of competition
Unlike most film festivals, Dundee Cinéma les Auteurs is not competitive but celebratory and offers a warm and supportive environment for new and experienced filmmakers alike.
Glenn Millar of Gomni Productions reported:
"Most of all, this festival is about celebrating creativity, not competition. Experience doesn't count—both veteran directors and newcomers are welcome to tell their stories. We want to capture the entire spectrum of Dundee's film scene and provide creative individuals with a platform to showcase themselves."
Championing Dundee’s creative talent
Millar also highlighted the bigger aim of the festival to place Dundee on the map of Scotland's creative industries, addressing long-standing calls for greater arts funding and exposure.
"By backing Dundee's artists and storytellers, we're looking to rebalance funding and profile deficits of the past and ensure that local voices are amplified and celebrated.
We've already got some great, unexpected, and culturally relevant films and videos in the pipeline and can't wait to welcome many more soon."
Free and accessible for all
One of the most significant promises of the festival is accessibility. All costs associated with the operation and promotion of the event are paid in full, so filmmakers and audiences may attend free of charge.
This is a real film festival for the people of Dundee," Millar said.
“We want to develop our creative community and encourage the next generation of storytellers. Come and join us in celebrating the fantastic work of Dundee's filmmakers and the city's unique creative atmosphere."
